"Science can not solve the ultimate mystery of nature, and this is because ultimately we are ourselves part of the mystery we are trying to solve." - Max Planck
“Humanity stands ... before a great problem of finding new raw materials and new sources of energy that shall never become exhausted. In the meantime we must not waste what we have, but must leave as much as possible for coming generations.” ― Svante Arrhenius
ARRHENIUS Center - Interdisciplinary Center for the Environment and Climate of Quebec
With the ultimate goal of founding a science center in Quebec City dedicated to interdisciplinary environmental and climate sciences, this site aims to make us visible to all future partners, members and lovers of our organization who are interested in this project.
Why the ARRHENIUS center?
- Svante Arrhenius is the great Swedish theorist of the late nineteenth century on the greenhouse effect. In particular, he demonstrated that doubling the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere would potentially increase its temperature by about 5 degrees Celsius.
- He was also the forerunner of scientific-based ecology by defining a mathematical relationship between a biogeographical zone and the diversity of species it can harbor.
Bridging an institutional gap in Quebec
As for the idea of the project, it comes from two observations:
- First of all, there is no science center in Quebec. However, every major city in Canada and the world usually erects such a center as a showcase of urban prowess and to attract technology companies or research centers in order to unfold their scientific know-how.
- Second of all, it should be in the mission of each city in order to shine to indirectly take part in the general education of its population by disclosing in particular the scientific knowledge with it.
A unique scientific center
- It is not a question of developing a scientific center like other cities, but of constructing an original, realistic and rational concept of how to achieve this objective as soon as possible.
-This scientific center would be at the crossroads of several paths between a thematic information center on the interdisciplinary issues of environment and climate in a friendly atmosphere with a thematic cafeteria and an exhibition and conference center.
The first steps
To set up this center would partly result from several future crowdfunding activities.
- The aim of this new type of scientific magazine is to outreach the general public for which interdisciplinary issues in environmental and climate related topics will be raised in depth on a regular basis. Also a more specialized magazine dedicated to environmental specialists is envisaged and will be available twice a year.
However, some topics might be more urgent than others to be addressed. Tell us in advance which of them you think need processing as quickly as possible in your eyes. To do so, please, go to the contact page and write us a brief message.
Thank you for your interest !
